FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH UNSUCCESSFUL TREATMENT OF DRUG-SUSCEPTIBLE TUBERCULOSIS IN PATIENTS FROM HUÁNUCO, PERÚ

Resumen

Introduction: Unsuccessful tuberculosis treatment in Huánuco represents a significant challenge for regional public health. Objective: To determine the factors associated with unsuccessful treatment of drug-susceptible tuberculosis in patients from a region of Peru. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the tuberculosis control program in the Huánuco region during 2021. Newly diagnosed patients who initiated treatment with first-line drugs and had a discharge status were included. Unsuccessful discharge was considered as therapeutic failure, treatment abandonment, or death. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Results: A total of 244 patients were included, with a median age of 37 years; 60.2% were male, and 6.1% had co-infection with HIV (TB-HIV). Overall, 13.5% had an unsuccessful discharge. Patients aged 52-89 years (PR: 5.00; 95% CI: 1.69–14.82; p=0.004) and those with TB-HIV receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) (PR: 3.11; 95% CI: 1.13–8.57; p=0.028) showed a higher prevalence of unsuccessful discharge. Conclusion: Patients enrolled in the drug-susceptible tuberculosis control program in the Huánuco region of Peru who were aged 53 years or older and those receiving HAART due to HIV co-infection had a higher prevalence of unsuccessful treatment. Effective prevention and control strategies focused on treatment follow-up for tuberculosis patients are recommended. © Article published by the Revista de la Facultad de Medicina Humana of Universidad Ricardo Palma.
