Resumen
A fruitful literary link was forged between the narrator José María Arguedas and the poet Javier Sologuren, two of the most relevant Peruvian writers of 20th century Spanish-American literature. Beyond friendship and editorial anecdotes, the thought and work of the Andahuaylas native influenced the Lima native’s notion of the national literary tradition in which his work was inscribed. This paper explores more concrete traces of this nexus. First, we examine Sologuren’s peculiar interpretation of an Arguedas who was a narrator as well as a poet. On this basis, the thematic and formal parallels between the novel Los Ríos Profundos [Deep Rivers] (1958) and the collection of poems Estancias (1960), dedicated to Arguedas, are analyzed. As will be seen, there are interesting concordances, and in both works, the literary epiphany is important as a revelation of a superior reality.
