Extended depth of focus imaging using optics and image processing

Jiji C.; Nandhini V.L.; Malini V.L.; Rodriguez R.C. · International Journal of Information Technology (Singapore) (2024) · DOI: 10.1007/s41870-023-01586-z

Resumen

The depth of focus (DoF) is an important element of imagery schemes that influences image quality. Extended DoF (EDoF) imagery is a difficult, ill-posed subject that has sparked a lot of research interest. We propose a novel strategy to the computational EDoF imagery issue by presenting the optics (camera) and image processing (turbidity removal and enhancement) algorithms as optimization frameworks. We use optical depth of elements to optimize CodeV, Global Self Similarity to reduce turbidity, Dark channel directed Gradient to improve visibility and sharp boundaries, and Weighted Grey Edge techniques to improve picture quality. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach by applying it to EdoF imaging. When compared to the conventional, the aforementioned enhancements result in better EDoF performance in terms of PSNR, SSIM, RMSE, and visual quality perception. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of Computer Applications and Management 2023.
