Resumen
The study aimed to design and implement a system that provides visitors of Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge Private Reserve in the Amazon Jungle of Peru with real-time location-based information and interactive experiences using their smartphones. The proposed system consists of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons placed along the Ecotrails that communicate with visitors’ smartphones, providing them with information through AR about the flora, fauna, and cultural heritage. The study utilized a qualitative method approach that involved a focus group. The results suggest that using BLE beacons can significantly enhance visitors’ experiences in ecotourism by providing contextual and immersive information and creating a sense of engagement with the natural and cultural surroundings. The study also highlights the importance of designing ecologically sustainable technology solutions, supporting the long-term preservation of the fragile ecosystem of the Amazon Jungle. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
