Evolution and Trends in Teaching Biopolymers Through MOOCs and Virtual Education: A Bibliometric Analysis

De La Cruz Noriega M.; Salvatierra-Espinola W.; Cabanillas-Chirinos L.; Cardenas M.G.; Mendoza-Villanueva K. · 2025 IEEE Digital Education and MOOCS Conference, DEMOcon 2025 (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/democon65705.2025.11282896

Resumen

The teaching of biopolymers in digital environments has evolved significantly with the integration of MOOCs and virtual education platforms. However, it still faces key challenges, such as the lack of adapted pedagogical approaches and fragmentation in the scientific literature on its digital instruction. The main issue lies in the difficulty of conveying complex concepts related to the synthesis, characterization, and applications of biopolymers through online resources, necessitating innovative strategies to ensure effective learning. Additionally, an even geopolitical distribution in academic production has been identified, limiting the participation of regions with high potential in sustainable biopolymers. This study employed a bibliometric approach to analyze the evolution of biopolymer education through MOOCs and virtual learning. Using databases such as Scopus, key metrics were assessed, including scientific output, international collaboration, and thematic trends. Tools like VOSviewer and Bibliometrix in RStudio were applied to visualize author networks, predominant keywords, and the conceptual progression of the field. The findings reveal a rapid increase in literature on virtual education in biopolymers, though with a stronger focus on technological aspects rather than specific teaching methodologies. Opportunities have been identified in the integration of artificial intelligence, advanced simulations, and gamification to enhance education in this domain. Moving forward, optimizing the accessibility and quality of MOOCs is essential to ensure specialized training that fosters the global sustainable development of biopolymers.
