Evaluation of the structural integrity of the sidewall of a sidewall of a curved panel after a lateral collision accident

Bonifacio D.D.; Ramos N.M. · Proceedings in Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (2022) · DOI: 10.1201/9781003320272-6

Resumen

This study is contemplated by means of a finite element analysis, which considers severe damage by eliminating the elements that will be damaged in a collision event, but does not establish how many elements are necessary, leaving a gap on the number of elements to be eliminated to later establish an ultimate strength analysis. This work evaluates the structural integrity of a post-impact collision event, the model is simplified by evaluating a sphere impacting a curled panel. Different severe damages are evaluated, which are obtained using the fracture, DNV, GL and Peschmann criteria, which consider the mesh pathology approach. Then, the damaged model is evaluated by calculating its ultimate strength, for different loading conditions, ranging from compressive to shear loads. In all case studies, ASTM A36 structural steel is used, for which the fracture site is pre-set to the fracture criteria mentioned above. The values of the criteria will be simulated using Ls-Dyna software. The results of this study are presented by means of moment vs. curvature curves of the panel compared with an intact panel and deformation record according to the fracture criteria.
