Evaluation of the Retreat Rate between Ancón and Anconcito, Ecuador for the period 2020 and 2021

Moreno Alcivar L.; Herrera Franco G.; Muñoz Rosado M.; Panchana Villon R.; Castro Valle R. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2024) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2024.1.1.1307

Resumen

The coastline is vulnerable due to many factors that put human activities along the coast at risk. The objective of this research is to evaluate how the coast has evolved in the section between the Ancón and Anconcito parishes of the Santa Elena Peninsula, Ecuador in the period 2020-2021 using Geographic Information System techniques and the Coastal Dynamics Analysis System. (DSAS). Two parameters were analyzed: net shoreline movement (NSM) and linear regression rate (LRR). Three phases of studies were carried out: i) field registration using an unmanned aerial vehicle; ii) image processing and interpretation using Agisoft Metashape; iii) analysis of coastal variation. As a result of the analysis of the 495 transects spaced every 10 m, it was evident that in certain sectors no movements were recorded and mostly varied setbacks of up to 5.19 m were observed. The average rate of change was -0.64 m/year, with a maximum of - 3.5 m/year in transect 26 which was caused by anthropogenic factors. In general, the Ancón-Anconcito coast experiences erosion at an average rate of -0.64 m/year, a magnitude similar to that recorded on the cliffs of the Patagonian Coast and Tierra del Fuego. 5.66% of the coastal profile did not show erosion, while the remaining 94.34% did, coastal dynamics are in action.
