EVALUATION AND RETROFITTING OF AN EXISTING HOSPITAL BUILDING IN PERU CONSIDERING FUNCIONATILY AFTER SEVERE EARTHQUAKES

Soto A.; Azuhata T.; Suwada H. · World Conference on Earthquake Engineering proceedings (2021)

Resumen

Nowadays, Peru has many essential buildings such as schools, hospitals, and public office structures were designed applying old codes and European books, and they do not satisfy current seismic codes. For this reason, this research focuses on a Peruvian hospital building, which is the National Building Cayetano Heredia. This hospital building was built 50 years ago, and its structural system is based on RC frames with masonry spandrel walls in the longitudinal axis, and RC frames with confined masonry walls in the transversal axis. Likewise, this structure has four stories. The evaluation consisted in determining the target drift angle taking into account the crack patterns, and the concept of residual seismic capacity applied two experimental tests: RC frames with masonry spandrel walls specimen and exterior steel braced system. The result evaluation of existing building showed that this essential structure needs strengthening alternatives to improve its seismic capacity because this seismic performance is in the Collapse Category, and also its drift angle does not satisfy the limit drift angle, which value is 1/300. For this reason, this building needs a strengthening alternative such as the implementation of external steel braces because the functionality of the hospital must continue before, during and after the earthquakes, and this retrofitting proposal takes into account parameters such as construction time, clean, easy implementation of steel elements, cheaper cost. The analysis made this retrofitting system applying the nonlinear static analysis (PUSHOVER) according to the ATC 40, and the capacity spectrum method showed an improvement in the seismic performance of the hospital building when the seismic capacity of this target building is subject to severe seismic demand (Rare Earthquake). © The 17th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering.
