Estimation of Deep S-Wave Velocity Profile Using Seismic Records Case of Lima, Peru

Soto J.; Alva J.E. · Current Trends in Geotechnical Engineering and Construction: Proceedings of 3ICGE-Iraq 2022 (2022) · DOI: 10.1007/978-981-19-7358-1_36

Resumen

S-wave velocity (Vs) profiles are used to assess seismic amplification and site class. These Vs profiles are usually obtained up to the first 30 m of depth; however, when the soil deposits are deep, methods such as Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves are insufficient. This article shows the method to estimate the deep Vs profile by means of the inversion problem of the spectral ratio (HV) of the horizontal motion with respect to the vertical motion of the diffuse-field waves. The wave field was considered to ground motions caused by seismic events. The HV spectrum was obtained from the use of seismic records. The deep Vs profile was obtained from that spectrum. As an application case, the deep Vs profileswere characterized in some seismic stations located in the city of Lima. These stations are located on sites with different seismic geotechnical characteristics. According to the results, it was found that the inversion problem can be applied to the HV spectrum in a reliable manner to obtain the deep Vs profile. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023.
