Environmental Awareness: A Quantitative Analysis in Engineering University Students

Minan-Olivos G.S.; Rivera-Ramirez Y.V.; Villota-Paz J.M.; Pulido-Joo L.A. · Proceedings - 9th International Symposium on Accreditation of Engineering and Computing Education, ICACIT 2023 (2023) · DOI: 10.1109/icacit59946.2023.10403670

Resumen

The purpose of this research was to quantify the environmental awareness of engineering university students. In this sense, a quantitative investigation with descriptive scope and non-experimental type was established since only one measurement of the phenomenon studied was carried out. Likewise, a cross-sectional research design was used since the data collection was carried out at a specific time. A digital form with 14 questions and a Likert-type scale was used: very low (1), low (2), medium (3), high (4) and very high (5). In addition, the form had a range between 14 and 70 for the total score. The analysis of the results for each question made it possible to determine that the engineering students established a medium-high level for their knowledge and participation in environmental issues with a value of 3.44 ± 0.84 and 3.69 ± 0.83, respectively. Regarding the total scores of the questionnaire, the mean of the environmental awareness scores was 49.87 while the standard deviation was 6.97, which means that the answers of the students fluctuated mainly between 42.9 and 56.84; that is, at a medium level. In the inferential aspect, the statistical analysis did not determine significant differences regarding basic education, professional career, gender and semester of study. Finally, it was possible to conclude that environmental awareness in engineering students is located at a medium level. On the other hand, it was concluded that environmental awareness should be a relevant indicator to measure the effectiveness of environmental education at the university field.
