Engineering Techniques to Increase the Profitability of a Steel Importing Company

Santos Gonzales C.E.; Mendoza Ocaña C.E.; Vera Villanueva T.R. · CISCI - Conferencia Iberoamericana en Sistemas, Cibernetica e Informatica (2024) · DOI: 10.54808/cisci2024.01.98

Resumen

The research seeks to apply improvements through engineering tools in a steel importing company to increase its profitability. The study began with a diagnosis of the current situation using an Ishikawa diagram to identify its root causes, revealing that the company was facing excessive costs due to internal problems such as deficiencies in supply, high costs for non-conformities, lack of training, poor distribution of the warehouse, lost time and absence of sales forecasts, affecting profitability by S/ 884,118. The application of industrial engineering tools had a positive impact, managing to reduce costs by 28.6%. Profitability increased by 1.3%, from 26.95% to 27.30%, and losses were reduced by S/ 252,638. The improvements implemented included forecasting, data analysis with Business Intelligence, MRP, redistribution and warehouse processes, maintenance plan, training program and master production plan. The implementation of the proposed improvements required an investment of S/ 216,311, resulting in a Net Present Value (NPV) of S/ 396,817, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 67.2% and a Benefit-Cost Index (B/C) of 1.93. © CISCI - Simposium Iberoamericano en Educacion, Cibernetica e Informatica 2024.
