Elemental structural characterization of four samples from a Peruvian Natural History Museum

Resumen

We characterized four mineral pieces belonging to a collection in the Natural History Museum at the National University of San Marcos (Lima, Peru). To determine the elemental composition of these pieces, we analyzed them by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). Quantitative analytical results were obtained by fitting the experimental EDXRF spectrum with another EDXRF spectrum, which was obtained by using a FORTRAN program based on the fundamental parameters model. Next, we used the X-ray attenuation coefficients provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the characteristic X-ray atomic parameters provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The analysis by X-ray diffraction for all pieces indicated the presence of hematite, magnetite, maghemite and goethite.
