Resumen
Currently, there is limited knowledge regarding sucking habits and their consequences among parents. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of a motivational educational intervention in parents to modify knowledge about sucking habits in their children. A quasi-experimental study with a test-retest design was conducted with two groups, involving 127 parents from an educational center. Data collection was carried out through a survey using a questionnaire with satisfactory validity and reliability characteristics. Two interventions were developed, traditional and motivational, previously validated through expert judgment in a preliminary pilot test. The Wilcoxon statistical test was used to compare knowledge before and after interventions. Prior to traditional intervention, the most representative level was low with 60.53% and after intervention it was reduced to 47.37%. On the other hand, prior to motivational intervention, the most representative level was also low with 58.43% and after intervention it was reduced to 15.74%. Both motivational intervention and the traditional intervention increased parents’ knowledge of their children’s sucking habits; however motivational intervention was more effective. © (2025), (University of Dicle).
