Resumen

This work was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effect of pruning and fruit removal on the incidence of diseases and the yield of cocoa in the town of Copallin in Bagua, Amazonas, Peru. Six treatments were evaluated [T0 = Control, T1 = pruning + removal of diseased fruits every 30 days + removal of “witches’ brooms” 3 times/campaign, T2 = removal of diseased fruits every 15 days, T3 = pruning + fruit removal diseased every 15 days, T4= removal of diseased fruits every 30 days, T5= pruning (elimination of “suckers” + sanitary pruning + removal of “witches’ brooms” 3 times/season + topping)], with four repetitions and under a Design of Complete Random Blocks. It was found that all treatments decreased the incidence of the fungal ear diseases “moniliasis” (Moniliophthora roreri), “witches’ broom” (Moniliophthora perniciosa) and “brown rot” (Phytophthora spp.); but they had no effect on the “cherelle wilt.” The treatments also increased the number of healthy pods and the yield of cocoa in slime and dry cocoa.
