Effect of nutritional teleorientation on disease progression in renal patients during the Covid-19 pandemic at a national hospital in Peru

Resumen

Background: Evidence on nutritional telecounseling for chronic kidney disease (CKD) is emerging, and its clinical impact in real-world settings warrants further documentation. Objective: To determine the effect of nutritional telecounseling on disease progression among CKD patients cared for in 2020 at a national referral hospital in Lima, Peru. Methodology: A quantitative study with a pre-experimental, longitudinal design. The sample consisted of 36 patients aged 40 to 70 years, diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease stages 3B and 4, who were registered in the renal health unit system of a national hospital of Peru. The patients participated in eight 90-minute telecounseling workshops on renal diet via the Zoom platform, twice a week, for one month. A clinical record form was administered through surveys conducted by a third party before and after the intervention. Results: A 45 % increase in patients’ blood pressure was observed after telecounseling. Regarding the effect on glomerular filtration, they improved by an average of 3.24 mL/min/1.73 m2. It was also observed that 100 % of patients did not experience disease progression. Conclusions: Nutritional telecounseling was associated with short-term clinical stabilization and modest improvements in blood pressure and eGFR.
