Resumen
The present research aimed to evaluate the effect of a nanoemulsion of L. camara essential oil against Aedes aegypti larvae. The essential oil was obtained by the ‘water vapour entrainment’ method, and its components were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The nanoemulsions were prepared using the ‘high energy’ method with the Tween 80 surfactant in a 2:1 SOR ratio. The experiment was conducted according to the WHO protocol with some modifications. Five concentrations were formulated (600, 800, 1000, 1200, and 1400 ppm), along with a blank group (Tween 80 and ultrapure water) and a control group (Temephos 0.03 ppm). Four replicates were performed per concentration, and the entire bioassay was repeated three times on different days. Mortality was recorded at 24 and 48 hours of exposure. The lethal concentrations for 50 and 90% mortality (LC50 and LC90) were determined using the Probit-Log method. The chemical composition of L. camara had 44 components, the major ones being βcaryophyllene, Germacrene D, α-caryophyllene, and Bicyclogermacrene. At 24 hours, the LC50 and LC90 were 842.449 ppm and 1626.255 ppm, respectively, and at 48 hours, the LC50 was 746.142 ppm and the LC90 was 1434.527 ppm. Therefore, the essential oil of L. camara in the form of a nanoemulsion demonstrated a larvicidal effect at 24 and 48 hours, acting as a natural and novel alternative for the control of Aedes aegypti. © Los autores.
