Resumen
Objective: To evaluate the effect of Helianthus annuus L. seed suspensión against ethanol-induced neurotoxicity in mice. Methods: The present experimental design study used sunflower seed suspension (SSG) and 35 male mice. Five groups were formed to which the following treatments were administered for 15 days, orally: groups I and II (water 10mL/kg), group III (vitamin E 20IU/kg), group IV (SSG 200mg/kg) and group V (SSG 600mg/kg). Thirty minutes after treatment, 40% ethanol (1.8g/kg) was administered intraperitoneally, with the exception of group I. Finally, the brain and cerebellar tissue was extracted to perform biochemical and histological analyses. The ANOVA statistical test was applied for parametric data and Kruskall-Wallis for nonparametric data. Results: Group V presented a decrease in lipoperoxidation levels, higher GSH, GSH/GSSG values and protein sulfhydryl groups, compared to group II, (p<0.05). At the histological level, protection of brain and cerebellar tissue was observed in the groups treated with SSG. Conclusion: The administration of sunflower seed suspension has a neuroprotective effect against the effect of ethanol, expressed in low levels of lipoperoxidation, increase in the GSH profile and better preservation of brain and cerebellum tissue. These results may allow us to recommend its consumption rationally in those people who are at risk of developing chronic degenerative diseases such as those related to nervous tissue.
