Resumen

Objective. To assess the effect of health education on the practice of diabetes preventive measures on adult users from northern Peru. Methods. Quasi-experimental analytical study, with pre-test and post-test, conducted with 33 adults without diabetes, evaluated with the Diabetes-Prev Scale. The intervention was a nursing-led educational program focused on promoting healthy habits, which was structured as sessions that included context-specific health education strategies, such as creating supportive environments, demonstrations, group activities, gamification, and the use of information and communication technologies. Results. The mean age of the adults was 47 years, with greater proportion of women (93.9%), cohabiting or married (69.7%), with basic education (84.8%), and overweight (60.6%). Prior to the educational intervention, the practice of preventive measures was regular (48.5%) and after such, it changed to favorable (97%). The median practice of diabetes preventive measures globally increased from 76 in the pre-test to 115 points in the post-test of 132 possible points. A significant effect of the intervention was also found across dimensions (p < 0.001). The magnitude of the intervention's effect was large (r = 0.73). The independent predictors in the generalized linear model were age, marital status, and body mass index, in addition to the respective interactions of age, marital status, and educational level with BMI. Conclusion. The nursing-led educational intervention produced a favorable and significant effect in participants' practices of diabetes preventive measures.
