DISCURSIVITY: THE ASSAULT AND CAPTURE OF THE MORRO OF ARICA AS THE VALUE FOUNDATION OF CHILEAN NATIONAL IDEOLOGY IN THE CITY OF ARICA (1930–1940); [DISCURSIVIDADE COMEMORATIVA: O ASSALTO E A TOMADA DO MORRO DE ARICA COMO FUNDAMENTO VALORATIVO DO IDEÁRIO NACIONAL CHILENO NA CIDADE DE ARICA (1930–1940)]

Resumen

This article examines the consolidation of Chilean national ideology in the province of Arica through publications in the local press, within the context of commemorations marking the anniversary of the “Assault and Capture of the Morro of Arica” (1880), between 1930 and 1940. It is argued that, in this border territory, there was a need to align local identities with the objectives of the Chilean State. To this end, publications from the Arica newspapers El Ferrocarril, El Pacífico, and La Gaceta corresponding to the period under study were analyzed. The analysis shows that the commemoration of June 7 served as a discursive resource for reinforcing Chilean national identity and patriotic values among the local population. At the same time, the press developed a discourse of fraternity toward Peru, in which former adversaries were reinterpreted through the exaltation of values associated with heroism and sacrifice. It is concluded that these representations contributed both to the consolidation of Chilean national identity in the new northern border region and to the construction of a discourse of rapprochement between Chile and Peru.
