Digital identity in higher education: a bibliometric review of scientific output (2005-2025)

Godoy Caso J.; Garro-Aburto L.L.; Rondón Vargas F.; Bobadilla Saavedra W.; Romero Vela S.L. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2026) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2026.1.1.759

Resumen

Digital identity has emerged as a central component of the student experience in higher education within the broader context of institutional digital transformation and the expansion of virtual learning environments. This study aimed to analyze research trends on digital identity in higher education through a bibliometric review of scientific output indexed in the Scopus database between 2005 and 2025. A quantitative, non-experimental, and descriptive-analytical approach was employed. Following a systematic search and the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, a final corpus of 64 peer-reviewed articles was established. Bibliometric analysis was conducted using Bibliometrix/Biblioshiny and VOSviewer to examine publication trends and keyword co-occurrence patterns, enabling the identification of dominant thematic clusters. The findings reveal sustained growth in scientific production since 2019 and a structurally fragmented research field. Digital identity emerges as a core theme interconnected with higher education, social media practices, and psychosocial dimensions. Overall, the results indicate that digital identity in university contexts represents a multidimensional and progressively consolidating area of research.
