Digital economy and business transformation in emerging markets

Aguado Lingan A.M.; Tejada Estrada G.C.; Pérez-Arboleda P.A.; Aparicio-Ballena J.A. · Revista Venezolana de Gerencia (2025) · DOI: 10.52080/rvgluz.30.112.6

Resumen

Over the last decade, the digital economy has established itself as a decisive factor in business transformation, especially in emerging markets, where digital technologies offered new opportunities to overcome structural limitations and improve competitiveness. However, technological adoption has not been uniform nor without challenges. This study aimed to analyze the impact of the digital economy on business transformation processes in emerging contexts, considering both the technological capabilities and institutional factors that influenced this transformation. A mixed methodology was used, combining documentary analysis, business case reviews, and surveys of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in strategic sectors. The study considered variables such as operational digitalization, business model innovation, and use of digital platforms. Quantitative data were processed using exploratory factor analysis and logistic regression, while qualitative interviews allowed for the interpretation of specific organizational dynamics. The results showed that companies that comprehensively adopted digital technologies managed to improve their productivity, expand their markets, and diversify their sales channels, particularly through e-commerce. However, significant gaps in digital infrastructure, access to financing, and digital skills were identified, especially in smaller companies or those located in peripheral regions. It was also observed that institutional ecosystems played a key role in accelerating or slowing digital transformation. It was concluded that the digital economy represents a strategic opportunity for business development in emerging markets, provided it is accompanied by public policies that reduce structural gaps, promote innovation, and strengthen organizational capacities.
