Development of Digital Twins for the Simulation and Exploration of Mars in Terrestrial Environments: A Proposal

Roman-Gonzalez A.; Huaman V.; Vara M.; Vargas-Cuentas N.I. · Proceedings of the International Astronautical Congress, IAC (2025) · DOI: 10.52202/083078-0013

Resumen

When an astronaut travels to Mars, he or she must be prepared with clearly defined tasks and detailed procedures for their execution. Currently, several Martian analogue sites on Earth allow for the simulation of Mars exploration missions, providing essential training for both astronauts and space professionals. However, implementing and maintaining these analogue habitats are expensive, complex, and logistically challenging, limiting their availability and accessibility to a small group of people. To change this limitation, one proposes the development of a digital twin of Mars, using advanced virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) technologies. This approach will allow the creation of more affordable and accessible simulation environments, making it easier for students, researchers, and young professionals to participate in space exploration training without the geographic restrictions or high costs of current physical analogues. The Mars digital twin will provide a versatile and immersive platform where users will be able to explore simulated Martian terrain, identify key tasks, develop technical and operational skills, and improve decision-making in realistic exploration scenarios. Through this tool, it is hoped to optimize the preparation of future astronauts and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in planetary exploration, ensuring that humanity is better equipped to face the challenges of future manned exploration on Mars.
