Development of a Low-Cost Phantom for Quality Control of B and Doppler Modes in Ultrasound Systems Installed in Peruvian Health Centers

Soriano P.M.L.; Campomanes K.A.V.; Purisaca P.A.A. · Proceedings of the 2025 IEEE 32nd International Conference on Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computing, INTERCON 2025 (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/intercon67304.2025.11244640

Resumen

This article presents the development of a Low-Cost Phantom for Quality Control of B and Doppler Modes in Ultrasound Systems Installed in Peruvian Health Centers. Given the resource limitations and metrological challenges in the country, this prototype aims to provide an accessible solution for evaluating the precision and reliability of ultrasound equipment. The phantom combines accessible materials such as paraffin gel, distilled water, glycerin, and silicone tubing to mimic the acoustic properties of biological tissue and blood flow. Additionally, it incorporates an automated flow control system for Doppler testing. Test results on five different sonographs demonstrate that the phantom can effectively evaluate parameters such as spatial resolution, image uniformity, measurement accuracy, and velocity in Doppler mode. With an estimated manufacturing cost of $186, this prototype represents a viable alternative to commercial phantoms, which can cost around $3,000. Opportunities for improvement include adding more complex vascular structures and evaluating pulsed flow. This work contributes to improving ultrasound diagnosis in resource-limited areas by providing an affordable and easily reproducible quality control tool.
