Resumen
The public transport system in the city of Juliaca, Peru, presents persistent difficulties in the fare collection process, characterized by the use of cash, delays in the handling of money, lack of transparency in collection, and poor financial traceability. These deficiencies generate financial losses and reduce operational efficiency. With the aim of overcoming these limitations, this paper presents the design and implementation of a low-cost and high-energy efficient Comprehensive Electronic Collection System (SECI), aimed at small and medium-scale local urban transport operators. The system combines an embedded electronic module with contactless RFID technology and a digital management platform for user and transaction management. The system registers passengers, top-ups and makes automatic charges using personalized RFID cards. Experimental tests demonstrated a reading accuracy of 96% at a distance of 2 cm and a power consumption of 0.102 W, evidencing high reliability and operational efficiency. Compared to existing manual methods, the SECI confirms the technical and economic feasibility. It also significantly reduces boarding times, minimizes human error, and improves transparency in fare collection. Its modular and low-cost design makes it a scalable and replicable technological solution for other cities in the country that seek to modernize their payment systems and digital passenger management. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
