Determination of prevalence, parasite load and strongyle fauna in horses under semi-intensive breeding (Huaral, Peru)

Belleza A.Y.M.; Zavala I.M.L.; Rendón D.A.Z. · Revista de Investigaciones Veterinarias del Peru (2026) · DOI: 10.15381/rivep.v37i2.28183

Resumen

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, parasite load and fauna of strongyles in semi-intensive horses in the district of Aucallama, Huaral, Peru. Faecal samples were taken directly from the rectum of 86 horses. The modified McMaster technique was used to determine the presence of Strongylus-type eggs (HTS) and to determine the number of eggs per gram of faeces (epg). Stool cultures were also performed to obtain infective larvae (L3) to differentiate between large strongyles and cyathostomins. The overall prevalence of HTS was 75.6% (95% CI: 74.7-76.5%) and the average parasite load was 42.6 epg. Stool culture revealed that 100% of L3 larvae belonged to cyathostomins (small strongyles). In conclusion, Aucallama horses have a high prevalence of small strongyles or cyathostomins, but with a mostly low to moderate burden. ©Los autores.
