Determinants of computational thinking in basic education students

Gutiérrez-Aguilar O.; Chirinos-Tovar K.; Huamán-Gutiérrez R.; Ticona-Apaza F. · European Public and Social Innovation Review (2024) · DOI: 10.31637/epsir-2024-1821

Resumen

Introduction: Digital competencies, closely linked to computational thinking (CT), are essential for shaping responsible citizens and equipping students with the necessary tools to face the challenges of the 21st century. This study analyzes the relationship between CT and various internal and external determinants in primary education students at a public school.. Methodology: With a quantitative approach and a descriptive-correlational design, the research involved 371 primary education students, using specific questionnaires on CT and associated determinants. Results: The findings reveal that CT is partially influenced by factors such as access to a computer at home, participation in extracurricular programming courses, and time spent in the Innovation Lab. Discussions: While CT is vital for developing critical skills and driving growth in the digital technologies sector, deeper research is needed on its teaching and its link to digital competency, questioning the behaviorist approach and emphasizing its importance in problem-solving. Conclusions: Continued research is crucial to optimizing its teaching and strengthening its connection to digital competencies.
