Detection of genes associated with oedema disease: stx2e and fedA in Escherichia coli isolated from pigs with diarrhoea

Resumen

The Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli type 2e pathotype (stx2e gene) and the expression of the F18 fimbria (fedA gene) are the main virulence factors of oedema disease in pigs. The objective of this study was to detect the stx2e and fedA genes in E. coli isolates from rectal swabs of 0–50 days old pigs with diarrhoea from pig farms in Lima, Peru. Of the 119 samples analysed by conventional PCR, six samples (5.04%) were positive for the stx2e gene, and three of them (2.52%) also carried the fedA gene. ©Los autores.
