Design of an Active Mechanical Lung to Simulate the Physiological Parameters of a Patient Connected to a Mechanical Ventilator

Guerrero F.; Grandez J.; Alfaro A. · Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems (2025) · DOI: 10.1007/978-3-032-00712-4_13

Resumen

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 200,000 patients worldwide require mechanical ventilation each year. Since this type of ventilation is essential in medical treatment, ensuring its effectiveness, accuracy, and proper configuration tailored to each patient’s unique respiratory patterns is crucial. For this reason, an Active Mechanical Lung has been developed to simulate the physiological characteristics of a patient’s lungs and provide an educational tool for physicians on the proper use of a mechanical ventilator. The system is based on a PIC18F4550 microcontroller, enabling the mechanical motion needed to simulate patients with specific respiratory traits. For precise volume and pressure control, a TSI hot-wire flow sensor and an MPXV2010GP pressure sensor were utilized, allowing exact parameter configuration. This research facilitates the representation of an active lung’s behavior, enabling the simulation of a real patient, which enhances both the training and education of healthcare professionals and research in this field. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
