Design of a Natural Gas Self-Generation Plant to Improve Industrial Competitiveness in Lima, Peru

Rojas J.L.E.; Aquino D.R.G. · 2026 11th International Symposium on Advances in Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering, ISAEECE 2026 (2026) · DOI: 10.1109/isaeece70502.2026.11635348

Resumen

This study evaluated natural gas electricity-only self-generation alternatives to improve industrial competitiveness in plastics manufacturing facilities in Lima, Peru. The industrial energy system was characterized through the analysis of electrical demand, load profile, operating conditions, and current electricity cost structure. The evaluated facility registered a monthly active energy consumption of 326,522 kWh, a maximum demand of 707 kW, and a stable base-load profile mainly concentrated outside peak hours. Based on these conditions, natural gas reciprocating engines were selected as the reference technology, and three demand scenarios were assessed: the current facility, a medium plastics facility, and a large plastics facility. The current electricity cost was estimated at 112.28 USD/MWh and was used as the benchmark for the economic comparison. Under the natural gas price sensitivity analysis, the self-generation cost ranged from 73.65 to 93.13 USD/MWh, remaining below the current electricity cost in all evaluated cases. On average, the self-generation alternatives achieved a unit saving of 29.24 USD/MWh, equivalent to an average cost reduction of 26.04%.
