Ruiz Gonzalez L.G.; Leon-Salas W.D.; Arias N.R.; Hoagland L.; Postigo-Malaga M.; MacEdo D. · Proceedings - IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (2026) · DOI: 10.1109/iscas66217.2026.11562934

Resumen

Bokashi composting is an anaerobic fermentation process that offers a sustainable alternative for organic waste management by preserving nutrients and reducing gaseous emissions associated with aerobic composting. However, the lack of practical and energy-efficient monitoring tools limits its optimization and broader adoption under real-world conditions. This paper presents a low-power, LoRa-enabled IoT platform designed for autonomous, real-time monitoring of Bokashi fermentation processes. The proposed system demonstrates the feasibility of long-range, ultra-low-power wireless sensing to observe anaerobic fermentation dynamics while operating under constrained energy resources. Experimental operation shows that the platform can achieve 38 hours of standalone autonomy on a compact Li-ion battery. An on-board solar panel can further extend this autonomy based on solar radiation levels. Overall, this work highlights the potential of low-power LoRa-based IoT architectures to support climate-smart agricultural practises and sustainable waste management through real-time monitoring of anaerobic bio-processes.
