Design and Sizing of Lithium-Ion Battery Storage Systems for Photovoltaic Self-Consumption

Inga Cahuana E.L.; Canahua Apaza N.M.; Castillo Ccorahua D.; Peñalva Sanchez J.J. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2025) · DOI: 10.18687/leird2025.1.1.1039

Resumen

The increase in energy consumption in urban buildings and the need for sustainability are driving renewable solutions with energy storage. This research proposes the design and evaluation of a photovoltaic system with lithium batteries for self-consumption in a building in Peru, aiming to maximize energy autonomy, reduce grid dependence, and improve profitability. The approach addresses the technical and economic challenges posed by solar variability and hourly demand in urban areas. The HOMER Pro software was used to simulate various configurations based on irradiance data, load profiles, and the costs of each system component. The optimization criteria included the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), Renewable Fraction (RF), and Net Present Cost (NPC). The optimal configuration consisted of a 2,500 kW photovoltaic array with 2,204 lithium batteries, achieving a renewable fraction of 100 %, an autonomy of 33.9 hours, and an LCOE of $0.198/kWh. The system presents an energy surplus of 50.7 %, which could potentially be harnessed for future technologies such as green hydrogen or electric mobility. © LEIRD 2025.All rights reserved.
