Resumen
To compare the density and morphology of the corneal endothelium between patients with and without Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) scheduled for cataract surgery. This was an observational cross analytical study with 251 participants (100 diabetic and 151 non-diabetic) attending at Hospital Almanzor Aguinaga Asenjo, an ophthalmological reference center in northern Peru, who were older than 18 years and scheduled for cataract surgery. The proportion of hypertensive and individuals under 65 years was greater in the diabetic group (p<0.05). There were no differences in polymegethism, but there were in pleomorphism (greater in diabetics). The median age of diabetics was lower (71 vs. 74 years). Hexagonality was lower in diabetics (62% vs. 65%; p=0.014). T2DM is associated with a reduction in hexagonality, a greater value in the coefficient of variation, and a lower endothelial cell density.
