DECO MODEL IN ADMISSION PROCESSES AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

Ilave M.G.; Tomé R.M.B.; Calderón K.L.M.; Camayo J.S.; Díaz E.O.Á. · Universidad y Sociedad (2022)

Resumen

In Peru there are several modalities of access to university, which depends on each institution, so applicants have to consult the university’s web page or go directly to the university to which they want to apply to know the admission requirements. In order for a student to be ad¬mitted to the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), he/she must take a cognitive skills exam (DECO). This type of exam aims to measure intellectual abilities to solve problems using previous knowledge. The objective of this research has been to analyze if there is a relationship between the score obtained in the admission exam and the academic performance coefficient of UNMSM students, as well as between the score obtained in the admission exam and the cumulative average score of academic performance. The results obtained show that there is a positive relationship between the entrance exam score and the coefficient of academic achievement, but this relationship is low, which indicates that there are other variables that are affecting the coefficient of academic achievement. Most of the stu¬dents (more than 62%) obtain an average or higher academic performance, and it is the year 2017 in which the best results are obtained.
