Cultivating Virtue, Sustaining the Republic: Education in the Political Philosophy of Niccolò Machiavelli
Garcés Arce G.W. · Revista de Filosofia (Spain) (2026) · DOI: 10.5209/resf.94733
Resumen
The main objective of this article is to explore the role of education in Machiavelli’s political philosophy. Through the analysis of his main writings, it is argued that he conceives education as a means for human beings to achieve that civic virtue whose exercise makes possible the realization of freedom and the common good. On this basis, it is argued that this civic education comprises three dimensions: the study of the histories of ancient peoples, the military training of rulers and governed, and the cultivation of a religion that converges with an active political life. © All content is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license for use and distribution.
