CREOLES AND ANDEANS IN LA VICTORIA. DEVELOPMENT OF POPULAR MUSIC IN A DISTRICT OF LIMA. 1900-1975

Chamorro O.R.V. · Historia 396 (2022)

Resumen

The intensity of migration to Lima since the mid-twentieth century brought with it new interactions between Lima residents and migrants, generated from musical practices and genres. The district of La Victoria, which had been a space where Creole genres had had an important development since the beginning of the 20th century due to the presence of popular sectors, was also the scene where Andean demonstrations gained visibility since the middle of the 20th century. The Andean genres that had been part of Lima’s sound space at the beginning of the century ended up being identified towards the middle of the century as distant folkloric or vernacular manifestations, different and opposed to the Creole culture that had been articulated by the State as part of the national culture. This article analyzes the trajectories of Creole and Andean music in La Victoria between the early twentieth century and the 1970s in relation to the generation of senses of identification developed in Victorian society.
