Cost Reduction in a Video Game Rental Microenterprise: Implementation and Evaluation of the Poka Yoke and Kaizen Tools

Calderón-Córdova J.; Fajardo-Pinto E.; Cespedes-Blanco C.; Ramirez-Valdivia C.; Torres-Sifuente C. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2025) · DOI: 10.18687/leird2025.1.1.1025

Resumen

This study analyzes the implementation of continuous improvement tools in a video game rental company in Peru, with the objective of optimizing processes by reducing defects, waiting times, and waste. In a context where research in this sector is limited, operational and cost efficiency is crucial for small companies to maintain quality and profitability in a highly competitive market. Although Lean methodologies have improved services in other sectors, their application to video game rental has been little explored. A relevant case is that of Rodríguez & Álvarez (2021), who, in an environmental consulting firm, applied Poka Yoke, 5S, VSM, a Suggestion System, and Hoshin Kanri, achieving a 56.55% reduction in cycle time [1]. Inspired by this approach, the pilot test of this study shows significant improvements in key indicators. The cost of sales as a percentage of revenue decreased from 44.10% to 41.50%, while the service error rate fell from 39.51% to 27.30%. Likewise, the average downtime per event dropped from 87.5 minutes to 54.3 minutes, and the percentage of rework due to detected defects decreased from 8.58% to 2.10%. These results reflect the potential of Kaizen and Poka Yoke to facilitate more agile and efficient operations, with direct impacts on profitability and customer satisfaction. The research suggests that the structured application of these methodologies can be replicated in other entertainment companies, offering process optimizations that strengthen competitiveness. © LEIRD 2025.All rights reserved.
