Resumen
This article explores, primarily through Gabriela Mistral’s correspondence with Ciro Alegría and Alegría’s book Gabriela Mistral íntima, how these two authors, both far removed from their homelands, forged their mutual connection around a shared concern for the Indigenous and mestizo-Indigenous populations of their countries and the continent. Recognizing the affinities that bound them, which also involved dynamics of self-recognition, they participated in discussions about the role and position of the writer and intellectual in this regard, thus contributing to renewed understandings of indigenism in their time. Our hypothesis is that Mistral and Alegría agreed to consider themselves “indigentist writers” due to their close personal connection with Andean Indigenous culture and their belief that the cultural richness of the South American region stems from this root and source.
