Convergent network of sexual performance and relationship satisfaction in a sample of Peruvian adults

Pérez-Flores E.G.; Serpa-Barrientos A.; Saintila J. · Sexual and Relationship Therapy (2026) · DOI: 10.1080/14681994.2026.2650397

Resumen

Sexual performance and relationship satisfaction are a complex area of study that significantly impacts quality of life. Although it has been explored in diverse cultural contexts, there is a need to understand these relationships in the adult population of Peru. This study evaluates the dynamic relationship between sexual performance and relationship satisfaction in Peruvian adults. In this study, 427 Peruvian individuals between 35 and 59 years of age participated, with a distribution of 52.9% men and 47.1% women. The sexual performance and relationship satisfaction scale was applied to assess the relevant constructs. Network connectivity and inferences were analyzed to identify key relationships between scale items. Network stability indicated a significant association (r = 0.15) between satisfaction in the current relationship (item KS2) and the ability to maintain an erection (item EXP3), suggesting a direct interdependence. Gender differences revealed a weak association among women between relationship satisfaction and sexual pressure and sexual challenges due to physical limitations. Among men, a small but significant relationship was observed between relationship satisfaction and perceived pressure during sexual interactions. These findings underscore the importance of considering aspects of sexual performance and relationship satisfaction together, and the need for gender-differentiated approaches in future studies.
