Conventional participation in municipal governance: A systematic literature review

Ventura-Seclén G.A.; Alarcón-Requejo G.; Burga-Burga R.E.; Vera-Alvarez D.J. · Clio. Revista de Historia, Ciencias Humanas y Pensamiento Critico. (2026) · DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18859432

Resumen

This article presents a systematic review of conventional political participation and its development in municipal governance between 2020 and 2025, addressing the existing empirical fragmentation despite growing institutional distrust and the expansion of digital communication. The aim was to identify trends and gaps in mechanisms such as elections, party membership, campaigns, and formal political channels. PRISMA 2020 was used to select studies from Scopus and SciELO using Boolean search operators, applying inclusion criteria based on period and socio-political scope. The information was organized in a systematization matrix and supplemented with a keyword co-occurrence network in VOSviewer. Fifteen studies met the criteria, with quantitative designs predominating. The results show that party affiliation and institutional trust predict greater conventional participation, while social networks have ambivalent effects. The article concludes that the field requires greater future comparative methodological integration.
