Contemporary and Future Challenges for Structured Democratic Dialogue

Laouris Y.; Midgley G. · Systems Research and Behavioral Science (2026) · DOI: 10.1002/sres.70122

Resumen

Structured Democratic Dialogue (SDD) is a participatory problem structuring methodology grounded in Structured Dialogic Design Science. It was created to help diverse stakeholders co-construct influence maps that reveal leverage points and support coordinated action. This paper addresses design choices for face-to-face workshops (participant numbers, duration, sequencing of problem/solution analyses), how to handle tangled or circular influence patterns (including time-horizon considerations) and how to integrate feasibility/impact criteria with mapping outputs. It also explores barriers to wider take-up—especially the scheduling of workshops alongside ongoing commitments, the limits of face-to-face working and beliefs that leadership could be undermined by stakeholder and community participation. Innovations in SDD to address these barriers are discussed. The paper closes by identifying three emerging challenges: immersive, online participation; scalability with methodological integrity; and human–machine collaboration using artificial intelligence (AI).
