Resumen
Introduction: Energy drinks are non-alcoholic drinks that stimulate physical and mental performance. Objective: Determine the factors associated with the consumption of energy drinks in university students. Material and Methods: Descriptive research with a non-experimental design. The consumption of energy drinks was quantified in a sample of 254 students aged between 18-30 years and from the professional careers of Nursing, Obstetrics, Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering. The data obtained was collected with a questionnaire of factors associated with the consumption of energy drinks. For the treatment and analysis of the data, Chi-square tests and Cramer's V Test were applied to determine the possible association between the variables of interest considered in the study. Results: Sex, age, employment status and place of residence have a high association with the consumption of energy drinks in university students and only marital status has a low association (p-value= 0.073). Furthermore, there is a relationship between professional career and frequency of consumption (p-value= 0.000) and reason for consumption (p-value= 0.041). On the contrary, There is no relationship between type of energy drink and professional career (p-value= 0.069). Conclusion: The factors that are associated with the consumption of energy drinks in university students are sex, age, employment status and place of residence. On the other hand, marital status is not associated with consumption.
