Resumen

Objective: To determine the comparison of two techniques for processing full dentures against Candida albicans colonization. Methodology: Analytical, descriptive study. 60 totally edentulous patients who attended the Dental Clinic of the UNMSM were evaluated. They were divided into two groups: patients with full dentures processed by thermo-curing (n = 30) and patients with full dentures processed by microwave (n = 30). The samples were taken by smearing the palatal area of the prosthesis in its tissue part and then placed on a slide and in a thioglycolate transport medium. The presence of Candida albicans was identified by the germ tube test, lactophenol blue and potassium hydroxide and cultured on Sabouraud agar with dextrose. The results were taken to an inferential statistic by means of the Chi square test. Results: A significant difference was found in the presence of Candida albicans in patients with heat-cured total prostheses 93.3% and microwave-cured 53.3% (p < 0.05). The median colony-forming unit (CFU) in patients with heat-cured total prostheses was 24.5 CFU, while in patients with microwave-cured prostheses it was 2 CFU, with a significant difference (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Patients with heat-cured total prostheses had a higher colonization of Candida albicans than patients with microwave-cured total prostheses.
