Methods: The Food Bank of Peru (BAP) rescues eligible edibles for human consumption that have lost commercial value and distributes them to a network of beneficiaries. Within this network are shelters. The main objective is to know, through their directors, the characteristics of six shelters that receive donations from the BAP and compare them. Results: each shelters have different characteristics, but despite that, everyone agrees that the contributions of the BAP have improved their food situation. In addition, directors consider it an important contribution in the nutritional improvement of their beneficiaries, although points were found to be improved in donations. Conclusions: Reducing food waste by rescuing and distributing it to shelters helps their beneficiaries in their nutrition, but does not cover all their needs, is complementary and does not attack the root of the problem, so it must be accompanied by other actions.
