Comparative analysis of the AASHTO and Eurocode standards for the design of cantilever walls used in the defense of the Tumbes River

Rodrigo Mendoza Macedo M.; Paul Linaja Ayala J.; Challco Mamani G. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2025) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2025.1.1.1392

Resumen

The Tumbes River, located in northern Peru, faces constant challenges related to flooding and overflowing riverbanks, affecting infrastructure and adjacent communities. To mitigate these risks, cantilevered retaining walls represent a viable solution. This article analyzes and compares AASHTO and Eurocode standards for the design of these walls. Structural, safety, and economic aspects are addressed, considering design parameters, materials, and costs. The results demonstrate significant differences in structural behavior and design efficiency, providing recommendations for optimizing the use of these standards for river defense design.
