Resumen
This article examines the presence of cinema as intertextuality in the narrative of the peruvian writer Miguel Gutiérrez (1940-2016), with particular emphasis on his novel El mundo sin Xóchitl (2001), whose central theme is the incestuous relationship between two full siblings. Their names are Xóchitl and Wences, who, despite their young age, are always aware of the transgression they are committing. On several ocassions, they take refuge in a movie theater called “Variedades”, located right next to the old mansion-like house where they live, in the center of the city of Piura on Peru´s northern coast. In this theater, the incestuous siblings enjoy a series of old black-and-white films characteristic of their youth in the 1950s, whose titles are mentioned with great fascination by the character-narrator of the story. Among these films, two stands out in particular: one by the american director Billy Wilder (1906-2002), and another by the spanish director Luis Buñuel (1900-1983), whose plots and conflicts are related to other themes developed in the novel EMSX. The personal preference of this peruvian writer for a cult film by the russian director Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948) is added. In this way, we attempt to demonstrate that all these cinematographic discourses are presented as records that are adapted through a semiotic transduction into the narrative discourses of Miguel Gutiérrez´s work, in addition to being considered as part of learning that remains as testimony and personal memory for this author.
