Chemistry Experimentation to Attract K-12 Students to Chemical Engineering in Cusco

Fernandez Bernaola U.R.; Marizol Yauli Bonifacio N.; Ramos Inquiltupa D.A. · ICACIT 2025 - Proceedings: 11th International Symposium on Accreditation of Engineering and Computing Education (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/icacit66767.2025.11369506

Resumen

The social outreach activities of universities are very important due to the impact they have on society; for example, the experimental workshops that are developed in schools directly show the impact of chemistry and engineering in our daily lives and encourage the interest of school students to apply for careers in science and engineering. The AIChE-UNSAAC Student Chapter of the Professional School of Chemical Engineering of the National University of San Antonio Abad del Cusco, conducted 11 workshops of experiments related to Chemistry and Chemical Engineering during the periods between the years 2021 and 2025. Covering topics of chemical reactions, electrolysis of water, colored foams, among others. These workshops were developed in virtual and face-to-face mode, reaching schools in the regions of Cusco and Apurimac. Additionally, this study conducted an analysis of the students enrolled in the School of Chemical Engineering during the periods between 2009 and 2025. It could be seen that the number of students enrolled had decreases and increases during different periods of time. There was a decrease between 2020 and 2023, where the student population decreased considerably from 512 to 387 students, probably due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. During the years 2024 and 2025 it has tended to recover and increase to 416 students currently enrolled. This increase may be due to the increase in the youth population due to the demographic growth of the Cusco and Apurimac regions, as well as K-12 related activities that encourage high school students to apply and study an engineering career, for example, chemical engineering.
