Resumen
The objective of this research was to characterize the vaginal cytology in relation to the phases of follicular growth, dominance and regression in llamas. The study was carried in the Laboratory of Animal Reproduction of the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano - Puno, using 10 female llamas whose ages ranged from 6 to 8 years old, regular body condition without standing offspring; the ultrasonographic evaluation was performed with a 6.5 MHz transrectal transducer, the images were analyzed in 4B mode. 5 MHz, the images were analyzed in 4B mode, the phases of growth, dominance and follicular regression were evaluated, then cytological samples were taken from the middle third of the vagina stained with the Diff-Quick® technique and evaluated with phase contrast microscopy at 400 X; the Leica LAS EZ® version 3.4 program was used to measure the cells; the percentage analyses were subjected to a Chi-square test. The percentages of parabasal cells were 22.2%, intermediate 22.44% and 16.95% during the follicular growth phase, intermediate cells for the growth phase, dominance and follicular regression were 43.76%, 44.59% and 47.64% respectively, superficial cells 38.79% during growth, 44.11% during dominance and 34.46% for the follicular regression phase; the morphological characteristics of the cell types from vaginal cytology in llamas are similar to those reported in other species. In conclusion, the percentage of parabasal, intermediate and superficial cells are indifferent to the phases of follicular growth, dominance and regression, it is suggested to complement with the determination of hormones such as estrogens and progesterone.
