Resumen
The fibre characteristics of male Huacaya alpacas from two alpaca farms in the province of Cajamarca, Peru, were determined. The mean fibre diameter (MDF), fibre diameter variation coefficient (FVDC), comfort index (CI), curl index (CuI), and fineness of spinning (FyS) were evaluated in relation to origin and age. Eighty animals aged 1 to 3 years were studied using Lasercan equipment. The MDF was 22.6 μm, the FVDC was 22.4%, the FyS was 22.3 μm, the CuI was 53.3%/mm, and the CI was 89.5%. The origin factor significantly affected the MDF and FyS, while the age of the animals significantly influenced the MDF, FyS, CuI, and CI. High correlations were found between MDF, FyS, CuI and CI. The results indicate that male alpacas from Cajamarca have adequate genetic potential for fine fibre quality. ©Los autores.
