Resumen

Agricultural policies to improve livestock productivity require information to formulate intervention strategies, according to the heterogeneous traits of farmers and the management of their farms. The aim of the study was to characterize the sociodemographic component of farmers and the characteristics of the Productive Systems of cattle farms in the Provinces of Tambopata (Laberinto, Las Piedras and Tambopata District) and Tahuamanu (Iberia and Iñapari District), Department of Madre de Dios, Peru. A structured interview was applied to 183 farmers in the five Districts, considering 33 indicators. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, contingency tables, association, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test, and cluster analysis. A significant association was found between districts with gender, secondary occupation, and primary source of income. The province and district were associated with the primary source of income, type of workforce, land preparation, pasture for grazing, and secondary cattle breed (P<0.05). There were differences between years of residence in the department of Madre de Dios and years of dedication to livestock, according to province, district, gender, and age (P<0.01). In addition, the number of hectares for grazing, and the number of heads of cattle varied according to province and district (P<0.01). Three groups of farmers were characterized: traditional-experienced, less experienced and experienced. The years of dedication to livestock were 32.4 ± 9.5; 16.2 ± 7.7 and 28.0 ± 11.6 years and the average animal units were 69.9 ± 47.7; 40.3 ± 34.6 and 314.4 ± 106.5, respectively. In general, there is a predominance of the productive approach to beef cattle (85.5%), use of Brachiaria brizantha for grazing (69.4%) and Creole cattle as the most frequent (68.8%). © (2023).
