Canine ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia canis). Case report

Ortiz-Vargas J.; Zambrano L.; Portal-Torres J. · Revista Cientifica de la Facultad de Veterinaria (2026) · DOI: 10.52973/rcfcv-e363948

Resumen

This report describes the case of a 3-year-old mixed-breed dog diagnosed with canine ehrlichiosis using a rapid antibody test. Laboratory results revealed severe hematological involvement characterized by anemia, thrombocytopenia, and marked neutropenia, accompanied by leukocytosis with lymphocytosis and monocytosis. Despite administration of a doxycycline-based treatment protocol, the patient showed no improvement and died due to disease progression. The necropsy confirmed the severity of the systemic collapse, revealing pulmonary hemorrhages, hepatomegaly with jaundice, splenomegaly, and renomegaly, as well as ascites and fibrosis of the omentum. These pathological findings are closely related to the pathophysiology of severe E. canis infection, highlighting the importance of considering concurrent co-infections in endemic areas when faced with cases of rapid systemic collapse. © (2026), (Universidad del Zulia, Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias), All Rights Reserved.
